You’re an executive at a global insurance organization.
It’s a beautiful summer day. You’re working outside on your terrace at home, sipping a beverage.
Your task is to review resumes for a credit insurance position you have open. You are creating three stacks for HR’s next step: yes, maybe and no.
You come to one resume with the headline, “Seraina Macia.” As you are reading a bird drops some, ahem, business from above.
After you say, “Ewww, gross,” you try to clean it all off. It’s not pretty, and it even smeared Seraina’s photo that is on the resume. (Yes, photos on resumes used to be a thing.)
Then you pause. “This might be a good omen. We should talk with her.”
Later, Seraina received an offer.
Today, after several insurance positions in several countries, Seraina is CEO of insurtech Joyn. You can hear her more complete story on the “On Point” podcast.
Talking with Seraina reminded me that it’s funny how insurance is a truly accidental career for most people. And, they often stay for life. Talented people like Seraina make insurance a better place.
Think about your own life journey. What led you to where you’re at today? Who were the people who really made it happen? What were circumstances influencing decisions you made … or were made for you?
Yes, you’ve got to show up to the game. Seraina put in the learning and the work. She had the chops to be in that pile of resumes. The bird took it from there…
Life is not a straight line.
There is something else going on.
You might have an opinion on what that is.
